How Do I Resolve Step Sync Issues Between Google Fit and Health Connect?

If your step count is not syncing or shows zero in the Qantas Wellbeing App on Android, overlapping data entries written simultaneously into Health Connect by Google Fit or multiple connected tracking devices are likely causing data collisions. While we recommend completely uninstalling Google Fit due to its upcoming retirement, you can also resolve the issue by disconnecting its permissions from Health Connect, clearing corrupted step logs, and refreshing your primary tracker.

Quick Summary & In This Guide

  • The Cause: Multiple apps or devices (such as Google Fit and a smartwatch) logging steps at the exact same moment create conflicting timestamps in Health Connect, causing steps to read as zero in the Qantas Wellbeing App
  • The Best Fix: Completely uninstall Google Fit, clear corrupted daily step logs in Health Connect, and sync your primary health tracker
  • Prefer to Keep Google Fit? You can keep the app on your phone by severing its connection and permissions within Health Connect

1. Why Step Conflicts Occur

Google is officially winding down Google Fit and will decommission the platform completely by the end of 2026. On Android, Google now uses Health Connect as the centralized, secure platform for storing and sharing health and fitness metrics between apps.

Because Google Fit is phasing out, leaving it connected alongside modern trackers (such as Google Health/Fitbit, Samsung Health, or connected smartwatches) introduces duplicate timestamps and conflicting log entries When two services attempt to write steps for the exact same block of time, Health Connect encounters a data collision, preventing the Qantas Wellbeing App from reading your activity .

To eliminate data collisions permanently and ensure stable single-source tracking, our primary recommendation is to delete the Google Fit app from your device :

  1. Locate the Google Fit app icon on your home screen or app drawer.
  2. Tap and hold the Google Fit icon until the options menu appears.
  3. Select Uninstall, then tap OK to confirm removal.

3. Alternative Option: Keep Google Fit but Disconnect from Health Connect

If you prefer not to uninstall Google Fit, you can keep the app by disconnecting it completely from Health Connect so it cannot send background step data:

  1. Open the Health Connect app (or navigate to Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Health Connect on your Android device).
  2. Tap Data and access, then select Apps with access.
  3. Select Fit (or Google Fit) from the list.
  4. Tap Remove all permissions or toggle Allow all to OFF.
  5. Open the Google Fit app, tap your Profile icon > Settings (gear icon), and ensure Track your activities is toggled OFF to stop local step recording collisions.

4. Clear Corrupted Step Entries in Health Connect

Note: This step also resolves zero-step issues for members who do not have Google Fit installed, but have multiple trackers (such as a Samsung watch and phone) writing duplicate timestamps into Health Connect simultaneously.

Because overlapping logs can create a high volume of corrupted entries, deleting all data for the affected date(s) is the quickest way to clear the block:

  1. Open the Health Connect app and tap Data and access.
  2. Tap Activity, then select Steps.
  3. Tap See all data to view your daily logs.
  4. Select the date where steps failed to sync or showed zero.
  5. Tap Delete all data (or the trash icon) for that day to wipe the conflicting timestamp records clean.
  6. If your steps have shown zero across multiple past days, repeat this deletion process for each affected date.
  7. Open your primary health tracking app (e.g., Google Health/Fitbit or Samsung Health) and pull down on the home screen to perform a manual refresh. This cleanly re-writes your accurate step count into Health Connect without duplicate timestamps .

5. Streamline Permissions for Your Primary Tracker

Ensure only one primary activity source and the Qantas Wellbeing App have active permissions in Health Connect :

  1. In Health Connect, tap Data and access > Apps with access.
  2. Select your primary health app (e.g., Health / Google Health)
  3. Ensure Activity sharing is toggled ON (blue)
  4. Return to Apps with access and select Wellbeing
  5. Ensure Activity reading permissions are toggled ON (blue)
  6. Confirm that no other secondary fitness apps or inactive devices have write permissions enabled for Activity .

6. Trigger a Manual Sync in the Qantas Wellbeing App

Once corrupt entries are removed and permissions are isolated:

  1. Open the Qantas Wellbeing App.
  2. Go to Profile > Settings > Data Sources > Health Connect and ensure Health Connect is selected as your primary source .
  3. Return to the Daily Challenge dashboard.
  4. Pull down on the screen to refresh or tap Sync Now to pull in your updated daily step total .
