What is a pre-existing condition?

A pre-existing condition is one where you have shown signs or symptoms within 6 months prior to joining Qantas Health Insurance or upgrading cover on an existing Qantas Health Insurance policy. Pre-existing conditions are only applicable to Hospital cover and apply to all members covered under the policy.

If you have a pre-existing condition, you’ll have to serve a 12 month waiting period to access benefits (subject to your level of cover) unless you’re switching from a comparable cover from another health fund and have already served the 12-month pre-existing condition waiting period. The 12-month pre-existing condition waiting periods apply to:

  • New members taking out a new Qantas Health Insurance policy,
  • New members added to an existing policy, and
  • Existing policyholders if you upgrade your level of cover (including changing to a lower excess level).
