What is an excess?

Your excess is the amount you must pay when you make a claim on your home and/or contents insurance policy. Think of an excess as your share of the repair cost. For instance, excess of $700 and your home is damaged in a storm, and the repairs end up costing $10,000, you only have to pay $700 - we would pay the rest.

You can find your excess amount on your certificate of insurance, which you can check online or through your Policy Manager account.

If your claim is the result of one event, and you’re claiming for both home and contents, you will only have to pay one basic excess, whichever is the higher of the two.

Keep in mind that some situations may have an additional excess on top of your basic one. If that applies to your claim, you'll see it listed on your Insurance Certificate.
