Does home insurance cover termite damage?

Home insurance is designed to cover loss or damage resulting from sudden or unexpected events - for example, a fire or storm. Termites however, are considered to be a common occurrence and therefore do not fall under this category (likewise, other insects, birds, lizards, rodents and vermin).

When insuring a property, it’s important that you check for termites, otherwise, you could be risking what you are covered for under your policy.

It’s also a good idea to have your property inspected at least annually to detect termites before they can do any serious damage. Left unfixed, any damage could be worsened by an insured event (e.g. a storm). If your home is not in a good condition at the time of the loss, it may affect your cover and ability to make a claim.
