Can I cancel my home insurance policy and get a refund?

It depends if you cancel before or after the cooling-off period:

  • If you cancel your home and/or contents insurance policy within the cooling-off period (21 days of either buying or renewing) and you haven’t made a claim, you’ll receive a full refund of the premium you’ve paid.
  • If you pay your premium annually, then cancel after the cooling-off period without having made a claim, you’ll be refunded any unused portion of your premium minus an early cancellation fee.
  • If you pay your premium in instalments (for example, monthly) then cancel after the cooling-off period, you won’t be charged a cancellation fee, and any payments you've made won't be refunded.
