Travel insurance and car rentals

While rental vehicle excess insurance is often offered by the rental company, it's worth considering if your travel insurance policy also provides similar cover.

Why should I consider travel insurance when renting a car?

If the rental vehicle you hire is damaged or stolen while in your care, and you have to pay an insurance excess under the rental vehicle hire agreement, then you may be eligible to file a claim. You may be covered under your travel insurance policy if rental car vehicle excess cover is included as a benefit.

Does Qantas Travel Insurance cover car rentals?

Yes, our International Comprehensive, Annual Multi Trip, and Australian Comprehensive policies offer rental vehicle excess cover. However, there are key requirements: the rental must be from a licensed agency, must have no more than four wheels and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) under 4.5 tonnes, you must be a named driver, and the vehicle needs Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or equivalent comprehensive motor insurance for the entire rental period. Please read the applicable PDS for full details and any exclusions for each policy.

What does the Rental Vehicle Excess benefit cover?

Rental vehicle’s insurance excess If your rental vehicle is damaged or stolen whilst in your care, and you must pay an excess or deductible as outlined in your rental agreement, Qantas Travel Insurance may reimburse you up to the amount specified in the Table of Benefits within the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS). This reimbursement is limited to once per policy of any rental period.

Return of rental car to rental depot If an event covered by your Qantas Travel Insurance policy prevents you from returning your rental vehicle to the rental depot, we'll cover up to $1,000 per policy. However, please note that this cover does not apply where the event preventing you from returning your rental vehicle is a natural disaster or due to extreme weather conditions at your destination. Please read the applicable PDS for full details.
