While rental vehicle insurance is often offered by the rental company, your travel insurance policy may also provide some cover.
Why should I consider travel insurance when renting a car?
If the rental vehicle you hire is damaged or stolen while in your care, you may have to pay an insurance excess under the rental vehicle hire agreement. You may be covered for the costs of that insurance excess under your travel insurance policy if rental car vehicle excess cover is included as a benefit.
Does Qantas Travel Insurance cover car rentals?
Yes, our International Comprehensive, Annual Multi Trip, and Australian Comprehensive policies offer rental vehicle excess cover. However, there are key requirements: the rental must be a passenger class motor vehicle rented or hired from a licensed agency, you must be a named driver or co-driver on the rental agreement, and the vehicle needs Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or equivalent comprehensive motor insurance for the entire rental period.
What does the Rental Vehicle Excess benefit cover?
Rental vehicle’s insurance excess
If your rental vehicle is damaged or stolen whilst in your care, and you must pay an excess or deductible as outlined in your rental agreement, Qantas Travel Insurance may reimburse you up to $8,000 per policy for the costs of the excess or deductible. Per policy means we will only pay up to $8,000 in total even if more than one person insured by the policy is a named driver.
Return of rental car to rental depot
If an event covered by your Qantas Travel Insurance policy prevents you from returning your rental vehicle to the rental depot, we'll cover up to $1,000 per policy. Per policy means we will only pay up to $1,000 in total even if more than one person insured by the policy is a named driver. However, please note that this cover does not apply where the event preventing you from returning your rental vehicle is a natural disaster or due to extreme weather conditions at your destination.
