Home and contents insurance is there to help if something unexpected happens to your home or belongings - like a fire, storm, or theft.
It’s made up of two parts:
Home insurance helps cover the cost of repairing or rebuilding your home.
Contents insurance helps cover the cost of replacing your personal things - like furniture, clothes, and electronics - if they’re stolen or damaged.
Think of it as a safety net for both your house and the stuff inside it.
What does home and contents insurance cover?
Home insurance usually covers the structure of your home - things like walls, the roof, and even built-in fixtures - if they're damaged by events listed in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), and only while your insurance policy is active. Contents insurance helps protect your belongings. If your things are damaged in a covered event (like a fire or burglary), or even if they’re stolen, your policy can help cover the cost of repair or replacement. Most policies protect things inside your home, and some might also cover certain items when you take them with you - just check the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), for the list.
What kind of events are covered by home and contents insurance?
Here are some of the common events (also called “insured events”) that home and contents insurance often covers:
Fire – Including damage from smoke and heat
Lightning – Especially if it causes an electrical surge or fire
Theft or attempted theft – If your stuff is stolen or damaged during a break-in
Vandalism or malicious damage – Like if someone intentionally damages your property
Broken glass or fixtures – Think windows, mirrors, sinks, or toilets
Storms and heavy rain – Covers damage from wind, hail, or rainwater
Water leaks – Like from a burst pipe or overflowing appliance
Impact damage – Such as a tree falling on your home or a car hitting your fence
Explosion – For example, from a gas leak
Earthquake or tsunami – Yes, those are covered too
Each policy has its own set of conditions and exclusions, so it’s a good idea to check the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to know exactly what you’re covered for.
Can both renters and home owners get home and contents insurance?
Yes - but the type of cover is different:
Homeowners usually get home and contents insurance - this covers both the building and everything inside.
Renters usually get contents insurance only, since the building itself is the landlord’s responsibility.
